Boston Marathon 2014 and Dana Farber

Cancer touches the lives of so many.  Every story is different and filled with every conceivable emotion as people make decisions about their way forward after diagnosis. A common thread through these stories is the hope found with advancements in treatment and care which are the result of new research and discoveries, many of which occur here in Boston at world-renowned organizations like the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

On April 21, 2014, I will run in the 118th Boston Marathon as part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC) team. DFMC directs 100% of the funds it raises to the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber, which fosters scientific breakthroughs by advancing the work of gifted researchers in a variety of basic research disciplines. These funds enable scientists at the leading edge of discovery to achieve better cure rates and to enhance patients' quality of life.

I have to admit that the idea of running my very first marathon is a bit daunting. But in the three years since running became an important part of my life, I have been inspired by so many people who run for a variety of charities and am motivated by their commitment and dedication to running for a cause.

Like so many of you, cancer has touched the lives of my family and friends and I am convinced that those who have run for charities before me have contributed to the research and knowledge that have impacted those I love.

I will also run the Boston Marathon this year because of the events at last year’s race. In the days and months that followed tragedy, I was struck by the resilience and determination of the people of Boston to bind together and overcome the obstacles and difficulties which were initially out of their control. I have lived in Massachusetts most of my life but have never been more proud to call myself a Bostonian.

I will run in memory of Clint Sanford, my step-father who lost his battle with esophageal cancer in 2000. I will run in honor of my sister and father, both cancer survivors, and my step-mother, who is currently in the late stages of treatment. And I will run for those you recognize through your donations.  I hope you will support me by giving a gift to my run and, in doing so, help Dana-Farber and all of us reach the ultimate finish line:  a world without cancer.
